80 Attend Williston Data Center Public Forum Hosted by Vern Thompson

WILLISTON, N.D. -  Vern Thompson, candidate for North Dakota Agriculture Commissioner, hosted a Data Center Forum for an audience of eighty or so at the Williston Research Extension Center Monday evening. There was standing room only. The non-partisan event was organized for the public to have their voices heard, share ideas, and get answers on what we know about data center development across the state of North Dakota.

Agenda:

1. Data Center Water Use, Power Use, and Infrastructure, presented by nuclear engineer Ian Gilley

2. Noise Studies, presented by archeologist Kimball Banks

3. Ordinance Planning, presented by environmental specialist and archeologist Signe Snortland 

4. Economic development and opportunities, presented by Williams County Commissioner Steve Kemp

5. Responsible Hyperscale Development Framework, presented by Vern Thompson

6. Public Q & A

The event was open to the public and all Williston City Council members and Williams County commissioners were personally invited, as well as area legislators and candidates. Current Agriculture Commissioner Doug Goehring was invited to attend but had a prior commitment. 

Representatives from Critical Data House were in attendance and answered many questions from the audience. The Q&A section of the evening went for an entire hour and many folks stayed after the event for more discussion. 

Thompson on the outcome of the evening event:

“The turnout and conversation highlights the need for more discussion amongst citizens, developers, and elected officials. No one was visibly angry or disruptive while people supporting and opposing data center development passed the microphones around the room so everyone could get a chance to speak. I think we proved that developers and officials should not be afraid to hold public forums like this. We were happy to show everyone how it can be done. The communities that we have hosted forums in have given us positive feedback.”  - Vern Thompson
